The airs that hover in the summer sky

Hoverflies are just not easy… the variations of individuals make it tough when some species are very similar. I leave it to the experts; I can only approximate confidence. However, I’m taking the plunge! The top species I am sure of, its common around here and I see it in the garden a lot. The second is, I believe a closely related species, but a migrant which turns up at this part of the summer. The differences are subtle but having pawed over the hoverfly book until my brain hurts I’m committing!

As always I’m happy for someone with more experience and expertise to put me right if I have it wrong.

Rant it out!
